Obituary
BERLINER – Burton, on March 17, 1992, at age 47. Member of Front Runners, Times Squares, Volunteer and Speaker’s Bureau spokesperson for GMHC. He is survived by his wife, Louella Berliner; mother, Sylvia Berliner; brother, Jordan Berliner; and companion, Allan Carp. Memorial contributions may be made to GMHC or PWA Coalition. [1]
Burton Berliner
Memorial services are planned tomorrow for Burton Berliner, 47, a photojournalist and writer who was raised on the North Side. Burial was private.
He died Tuesday in his New York home. No cause of death was available.
Mr. Berliner had been photo editor for the Associated Press in New York for more than 10 years before leaving to do free-lance writing. His book, 50 Famous Faces in Transition, was published in 1980.
While attending the Chicago Conservatory of Music, he won three competitions and was named "Most Talented Senior" of the Von Steuben High School class of 1962.
"A teacher at the conservatory said he could become a talented pianist," said his mother, Sylvia. "But she told him that he needed a lot of money and a sponsor, so she suggested he take up art."
He earned an art degree at the University of Illinois, where he met his wife, Louella. He was a Vietnam-era veteran of the Air Force, serving as a photojournalist, and joined AP in 1974.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a brother, Jordan.[2]
Remembrances
Burt Berliner, member of the founding class of the Times Squares, died peacefully at his home on March 17th. He engineered the Times Squares’ first public triumph, entering a group of Times Squares members – The Big Apple Tarts – in the Moondance Diner dance contest in the spring of 1985. At the last moment, Burt valiantly appeared in drag (for his first and last time) in Mark Davis’ stead. The group twirled away with the Grand Prize.
A man of firmly held and strongly expressed opinions, Burt was an enthusiastic dancer, and successfully encouraged many of his friends to join Times Squares. He was also a member of Front Runners, and a spokesperson for the GMHC Speaker’s Bureau. His survivors include his wife Lou and his lover, Allan Carp. Memorial contributions may be made to GMHC or PWA Coalition. Burt’s integrity, generosity, and infectious laugh will be missed.[3]
