Editor:
Recently, I attended a concert given by the Girlfriends at The Eastlake East. I had seen them perform a number of times before, and always enjoyed their shows.
However, it was impossible to enjoy them at the Eastlake East. Halfway through their first set, a number of people from the audience got up to dance, completely blocking not only our view of The Girlfriends, but their view of us. As a performer, I know the importance of eye-to-eye-contact with one’s audience for a good show. The women and men dancing in front of the stage made this completely impossible.
Therefore, during their first break, I complained that we had paid a three-dollar cover charge to see The Girlfriends, not a bunch of people dancing.
So, as the group opened up their second set, they asked the audience to refrain from dancing. This helped, but there were still a few people who insisted on disrupting the show by dancing. As a member of the gay community, I feel it’s not only important to support, but to respect, a group as talented as The Girlfriends. We should be damn proud to have a group of this caliber performing for us in our clubs.
Obviously, however, a large number of the clientele at The Eastlake East don’t appreciate this talented group. It’s a real shame.
Sincerely,
Donald Hutt[1]
