DGH to hold memorial for Doug Wollard
By The Denver Post

Staff members of Denver General Hospital will gather at 10 a.m. today for a service to remember Doug Wollard, a DGH administrator who oversaw the first major construction at the hospital in 22 years.

Wollard died Thursday at hoe. He was 46.

A longtime illness forced him to retire Oct. 31, 1992, as an associate director of hospital services. Wollard had been in DGH's administration since 1986, serving as deputy manager of support services and as the first director of the 350-bed facility.

Wollard was born on March 4, 1947, in Lamar. He received a master's degree in health care administration from the University of Iowa and served as vice president at Lutheran Hospital for 10 years before moving to DGH.

Wollard oversaw expansion of DGH's emergency room and surgical and lab areas as part of a $7.2 million bond issue approved by Denver voters in November 1989. The hospital also added $4.2 million for a surgical intensive-care unit and helipad. The new trauma center was opened in February, as Wollard watched from a wheelchair.

Wollard also supervised construction of the new Denver C.A.R.E.S. facility, pushed for a number of interior hospital improvements and turned DGH's cafeteria into a profitable operation.

"Doug was the type of perso who was perfect for this hospital," said Tom Moe, co-manager of Denver Health and Hospitals. "He was dedicated to his work and to doing perfectly and completely, and he had the ability to do it to his standards. He was dedicated to the people who worked with him and the people he worked for; the patients who who come here for medical care."

As he faced death, Wollard urged DGH colleagues to adopt the agency's mission as part of their personal life goal:

"If you keep this goal in mind, all the little irritations melt away. Our mission is to provide healthcare services to a group of individuals who otherwise would not have any, or almost no access to healthcare in this community."

A memorial service was held Monday at Metropolitan Community Church. There was cremation.

Survivors include his daughter, Sara, Wheat Ridge; son, Eric, Eugene, Ore.; his sister, Pamela Dace, Westminster; his mother and father, Gladys and Young Lowe Wollard, Westminster; and his companion, Robert Pletcher.

Contributions may be made to the Doug Wollard Memorial Fund, c/o Denver Health and Hospitals Department's hospital auxiliary, 777 BAnnock St., Denver 80204.[2]
