- From the Program Book of the 4th IAGSDC Convention, held in Portland, OR in 1987:
- The Golden State Squares was founded in February, 1986 by a small group of dedicated, progressive square dancers. We made our first public appearance as an organized club at the 1986 LA Gay Pride Parade. Our first class graduated from basic level early this year and has completed Mainstream in time for the Portland convention. We do exhibitions from time to time locally in an effort to promote interest in Gay square dancing. Earlier this year we hosted a successful beer bust at the popular Floyd's bar in Long Beach'
