Remembrances

IVANA IS DEAD,
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

Ken Weisen, 1948-1994

On Monday, November 28, 1994 Ken Weisen died from complications due to AIDS. He was one of my closest friends, and one of the sweetest men I will ever know. I met him back in 1988 in our Mainstream class. At the time, I lived in Forest Hills, Queens and so did he. I didn’t know Ken until one evening during class he came up to me, and without introducing himself, said, “I heard you live in Forest Hills.” “yes,” I answered. “Then, I’m taking you home, because I live in Forest Hills too and I have a car,” he said. From then on we drove home together after every class. That’s the way Ken was. If he figured he could make you a little happier by driving you home or buying you dinner or calling you up, he’d do it. Probably many of you don’t remember Ken because he stopped dancing about three years ago. But maybe you remember Ken at Halloween and Christmas dances dressed up like Tina Turner, with the dish name IVANA LOTTA COX. Ken had a terrific sense of humor and he and I spent many evenings roaring to Divine movies. I’m going to miss him very much as will anyone lucky enough to have known him. I’m sure Ivana is dancing like crazy up there somewhere with his partner Joseph, having a fabulous time.
