Obituary

AIDS Patient, Columnist Larry Peck Dies

Larry Peck, 32, an AIDS patient who wrote a biweekly column for the Albuquerque Tribune, died Sunday of complications of the disease.

An Albuquerque resident since 1983, Peck was an alcohol and drug abuse counselor. He was the first director of the Gay Men's Heath Project for New Mexico AIDS Services, a position he left a year ago because of his illness.

He died Sunday morning at his home in the company f his stepmother and a number of friends from across the country. His lungs had partially collapsed Friday, after which he was in and out of consciousness, said a friend, Dennis Dunnum.

Peck was cremated Monday. He had requested that a memorial service be conducted two weeks after his death; Liz Stefanics, executive director of New Mexico AIDS Services, said she should have more details Friday about the time and place for the service.

Peck was a native of Cato, N.Y. He is survived by his mother, father and stepmother; three sisters and a brother in New York, and a sister in Arizona.[1]

PECK — Larry Hunter Peck died on Sunday, April 30, 1989. He died following a year and a half of living consciously, sometimes painfully, and always lovingly with AIDS. Larry was 32 years old and leaves behind his loving stepmom, Claire; his father, Robert; his mother, Joyce; four sisters, Bonnie, Linda, Lisa and Patty; brother Robert; his cat, Sylvester; many, many friends and many more who have come to know him through his articles for the Albuquerque Tribune and his work for New Mexico AIDS Services. His passing was lovingly midwifed by his stepmom, Claire and a close group of friends. He joins his lover, Steve; his little brother, David and too many friends who have already died of AIDS. Larry was the first director of the Gay Men's Health Project for New Mexico AIDS Services and was an alcohol and drug counselor before that. There will be a private Memorial Service for friends and family on May 14, 1989. Because there are so many people who have come to know Larry through his work and writing, there will be a special public tribute to him as part of the AIDS Memorial Ascension on Sunday, May 28, 1989 at 4:30 PM in the Old Town Plaza. Larry had asked that donations be made to New Mexico AIDS Services to which he gave so much of himself. Cremation is at Vista Verde Memorial Park; arrangements by Sunrise Cremation Society of N.M.[2]
