Obituary

IN MEMORIAM
P.J. DeVino
1952-1992

P.J. DeVino, a pioneer in the Gay Catholic movement in Seattle, passed away in the loving presence of his partner, Robby Robinson, on October 22. In a tragic irony, it was also Robby’s birthday.

P.J. was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in North Platte, Nebraska. After high school he went into the Air Force, serving part of the time in Germany, where he met Ron Weeks, who first told him about Dignity, a nationwide organization of Gay & Lesbian Catholics. P.J. decided to move to the Northwest after leaving the service in 1976.

He immediately became involved with Dignity. P.J. frequently hosted potlucks for the community, including the annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner for the many people who would otherwise spend the holiday alone. He was also well-known as the fund-raising Tupperware Queen, and as Anna Lee Do-all of Fistful of Crinolines. How can anyone forget how she would (literally) “bust” through a crowd.

P.J. met Robby in December 1988 at Dignity; he successfully snared Robby the next month at a Tupperware party! Long-time residents of West Seattle, they decided to build their dream house in a wooded ravine. P.J. was able to spend his final months in a home built by love and perseverance.

P.J. worked for Rafael Carrabba Violins for 15 years. Besides Robby, he is survived by his parents and sister, Sharon, and brother, Bruce. A Christian Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph Church October 26. Memorial donations in P.J.’s name may be made to: Chicken Soup Brigade, 1002 E. Seneca, Seattle 98122; Northwest AIDS Foundation, 127 B’way E., No. 127, Seattle 98122; and In Touch, 127 B’way E., Seattle 98122.

P.J., we will truly miss your warm smile and quick wit, your generosity, and above all, your friendship. Rest in peach, my friend, knowing that we will take care of Robby … [1]

One of the [Seattle] chapter's earliest members, P.J. Devino, died on October 22nd. From 1976 until his death, he served in many roles. Until 1986, he was a well-known regional director, treasurer, and representative. He then served in several roles on the chapter's Board until 1990. He frequently hosted community potlucks and an annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner. P.J., survived by his partner Robby Robinson, will be missed by his many Dignity friends.[2]
