Prentice L. “Bump” Haegen died peacefully at home, Friday morning, February 5, 1993.
Bump was preceded in death by his life partner, Kary Hamner, and his mother, Florence Haegen. He is survived by his father, Leo F. Haegen, of Buffalo, Montana; three sisters, one brother, nieces and nephews. Bump is also survived by his primary caregiver during his illness, Tony Lewis; numerous other friends and acquaintances who lives he touched in his own special and unique way.
Bump was born June 25, 1954 in Lewistown, Montana. He attended local schools and in 1974 entered the US Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1976. He ended his naval career in Bremerton and settled in Seattle after his discharge. It was at this time that he met his life partner and they were together until Kary’s death in January, 1988.
In 1986, Bump received an AA degree from Seattle Central Community College. He then continued his education at the University of Washington, earning his BSW in 1989 and his MSW in 1991. During this time he was active in many AIDS service groups in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.
