Obituary

GOD HAS SET HER FREE Please join in the celebration of life at the memorial service for Vena Szejn on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at St. Catherine Laboure Church, 4124 Mt. Abraham Avenue, San Diego, CA 92111, (858) 277-3133 at 10:30 a.m.

Vena was born in Muskegon, Michigan and moved to San Diego due to her husband's Theodore A. Szejn, transfer by the Navy. Both the Szejn's were very active in their church of St. Mary Magdalene in San Diego while raising their son and daughter. As husband and wife, they were avid square dancers and were well-known by the clubs in the San Diego area.

Following the death of Vena's husband in 1990, she remained active in the church and square dance clubs. Vena was always ready to help out an elderly friend with a ride, cooking meals, and baking. She loved her home, gardening, bridge, weekly movies, and in her prime, was an excellent seamstress.

She is survived by her son, Robert M. Szejn of Thousand Oaks, his wife and two children, as well as her daughter, Debra Y. Miller, her husband and her son. "Don't grieve for me as God called me home and has set me free." May she rest in the peace of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com [1]

Remembrances

I met Vena at the club that danced at the union hall that is now the Center. I had finished Plus, and in 1993 was looking for a club to learn Advanced. Vena and I were assigned to be partners for the class. I was working out of town at the time, and Sunday afternoon/evenings were the only time I was able to take a class in San Diego.

We got along well, and after some time I found out that Vena was disappointed to find out that I am gay. She had some hopes, but adapted well, and started coming to both Ocean Squares and Finest City Squares, eventually becoming a member of both clubs.
