Dewey Calvin Childs, 43, died Sunday, December 5, 1993, at his Alington, Virginia home, of complication associated with AIDS, according to his partner, Darrell R. Ertzberger.

Childs was born December 12, 1949, in Covington, Va. He graduated from Alleghany High School in Covington in 1967, and attended Phillips Business College in Lynchburg, Va.

In 1971, Childs moved to the Washington area. He worked as a legal secretary at a number of firms. Most recently, he was a legal secretary at the law firm of Shea & Gardner in D.C.

Childs was a longtime member of a 12-step group. He served as co-chair of the Capital Roundup, a local coalition of Gays in recovery. His hobbies included square dancing with Lambda Squares and attending the Atlantic State Gay Rodeo.

As an animal lover, Childs kept many pets, including dogs, cats and a horse. His last cats were Muning, Maggie, and Morgan.

In addition to Ertzberger, Childs is survived by his parents, Daniel Lewis and Hollie Scott Childs; three brothers, Ronald, Robert, and James, all of Covington; and friends, Charles F. Magness of Falls Church, Va., John Lass of Baltimore; and Reynaldo Aguirre of Washington.

His remains were cremated and the ashes were returned to his family. A service in Child's memory will be held at 5 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church, 2300 Cathedral Ave., NW.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry, 413 Duke St., Alexandria, VA 22314.[1]
