Hexagon

by Steve Browning:

I came up with the idea of using 6 couples in a hexagon formation in 1985. I was working on choreography for the Foggy City Exhibition Team and trying to invent some variations to the traditional 4 couple square. I had never seen anything like a hexagon, so I had to "invent" it myself. I could see lots of possibilities for putting together some fun patterns using the hex concept. The first hexagon performance at an IAGSDC convention was done at the 1986 San Francisco Convention: "Star Thru The Golden Gate". It was done using the singing call "Mama Don't Allow". At the middle break, I brought in 2 more couples and converted the hex to an Octagon! However, the 1st Hex performance in the gay square dance community was done at Ft. Cronkite in 1985 (see below).

Performances:

Foggy City Dancers had a number of retreats to Ft Cronkite, in the Marin County Headlands, where the team practiced and partied the weekend away.

There was always a Hoedown sometime during the retreat and these performances were done at the hoedown.
