Obituary

'SHERMAN — Edward. "Peace, Peace! he is not dead, he doth not sleep. He hath awaken'd from the dream of life." Edward Sherman lost a marathon game of gin rummy with cancer which began in 1995. Edward was not born in a trunk at the Princess Theater in Pocatello, ID. He was, rather, born in Manhattan, which he always referred to as an independent island nation off the east coast of America, and where he lived most of his life. He was a graduate of New York City's prestigious High School of Music and Art (Art), Hunter College in The Bronx (BA, History) and the University of Wisconsin, Madison (MA, History), which he left before completing his doctoral dissertation, earning him the sobriquet "Jewish drop out." Edward was a member of the Stonewall Generation and was an early member of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and the Gay Activist Alliance (GAA). He was a founding member of the Gay Switchboard - a name the telephone company refused to list in its directory, objecting to the word "gay." Edward taught Special Education in the NYC Public School System for 34 years, first as a classroom teacher, then as a Crisis Management Teacher (Dean of Students), and finally as the Manhattan Borough Coordinator of District 75's Travel Training Program which taught thousands of students with disabilities how to use the city's buses and subways, thereby giving them the priceless gift of independence. Edward loved good food, good movies and plays, good music, good books, good conversation. He was a loving brother, adoring uncle, and a loyal friend. He was predeceased by his parents from whom he inherited excellent teeth; in lieu of a portfolio of blue chip stocks or a square block of real estate in Midtown Manhattan. Donations in his honor and memory may be made to Red Door Community (formerly Gilda's Club) at 195 W. Houston Street, New York, NY 10014. Tell 'em Edward sent ya.[1]

Remembrances

When I think of Edward I remember his lightning-fast wit. It was probably even more fun to talk with him between tips than to dance with him - and dancing with him was a LOT of fun. He always had people laughing over his razor-sharp comments about politics or something absurd in pop culture. In the membership directory what did he list as occupation? Honkytonk Pope.
