Obituary

In the early morning of Saturday, May 23rd, 2009, Raymond Elgin Hodgins Phelps of Vancouver passed away too young at age 63 at St. Paul's Hospital after a hard fought battle with cancer and complications from pneumonia. As the sun broke into a glorious day Elgin was surrounded and held with prayer, love and tenderness by family members and Minister as he embarked forward on his new journey, After Graduating from Law School at Ottawa University, Elgin worked as a lawyer and District Director for the Bureau of Pensions Advocates where he helped many Canadian veterans in achieving a better quality of life for their sacrifices until his retirement in 1995. Elgin was also deeply active and a proud member of the Vancouver Gay community and was a founding member of Squares Across the Border. He leaves behind a legacy of great caring and giving to his community and church. He will be lovingly remembered by all those who knew him and who he touched and he will live on in our spirit and hearts forever. Elgin is survived by his loving husband and partner of 25 years Roger, Mother Mildred Thomas, step father Ronald (Oliver, BC), mother-in-law Arlene (Oliver, BC), sisters Elaine (Oliver, BC) and Shirley (Midland, ON), son Todd and daughter-in-law Janis (Vancouver, BC), grand-daughter Jaymee (Langley, BC). He was predeceased by his father and brother. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 13th, 3:30 pm at St. Andrews Wesley United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elgin's name to either the B.C. Cancer Agency or St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church.
